Food and culture have been highlighted during the month of May thanks to a Linkwest Grant and the Greenbushes Community Resource Centre.
Greenbuses CRC coordinator Angie Cornish organised two events with the grant funding aimed at bringing different generations together and learning about diverse cultures.
“The theme of the grant was ‘Grow Together, Eat Together’ with the aim to promote relationships within the community and offer a social experience for those involved in a fun casual environment,” Mrs Cornish said.
“We held a seniors cooking activity and two weeks later held a Japanese cultural luncheon.
“These were both great opportunities to promote healthy food options and share cultural traditions as well as help raise awareness of the CRC. “
WA Country Health Services officer Michelle Spargo assisted with the seniors’ cooking activity providing tips for economical meals and helping the adults prepare a meal which was then shared with older students from the Greenbushes Primary School.
Senior participants enjoyed the cooking session and were pleased the students enjoyed the healthy food they prepared for them.
After this the food and cultural traditions of Japan were on the menu with students creating a feast of sushi and miso soup as part of their Japanese language studies.
Teacher Yuko Tonai-Moore and CRC Coordinator Angie Cornish guided the students as they prepared the traditional Japanese food.
Mrs Cornish, who lived in Japan for nine years, also brought a selection of Japanese clothing including kimonos for students to wear.
Locally owned and operated, Community Resource Centres provide a wide array of information and community-based services to local people, businesses and visitors and are committed to developing regional communities and connecting the people of Western Australia.
“These activities were a great way to showcase the local CRC and I was very happy with the positive feedback I received from both activities,” Mrs Cornish said.
“I am pleased that different generations are realising that they can utilise the facilities and services that we provide.”
