Imperials undefeated run in season 2016 is over after they suffered a 14 point round nine loss to Southerners on Sunday.
The Magpies shocked their home crowd with a slow start, trailing 4.4.28 to 1.1.7 at quarter time.
During the second quarter Imperials took the ball into the forward 50 plenty of times but struggle with accuracy, adding three goals and 10 behinds to the scoreboard.
Up the other end Southerners piled on another four goals to lead by 17 points at the main break.
The third quarter continued to deliver the surprises with Imperials held scoreless and the margin increasing to 38 points.
With their backs to the wall, the side with six straight wins came out swinging and added five straight goals to their final score. But it wasn’t enough to secure victory.
Three goals to Brett Dobson and two each to Viv Blurton, Jordan Aitken and Mitchell Decampo secured Southerners the win 12.7.79 to 9.11.65.
Rohan Lilly and Arthur Bennell both kicked three goals for the home team.
The loss means Bridgetown are now just one game behind the Magpies after a Saturday afternoon win over Boyup Brook.
The Roos started well kicking three goals in the first quarter while the Bulldogs came alive in the second and led by 20 points at half time.
Sean Barrett and Ryan Pessotto impressed for Boyup Brook in the third, continuing to win the hard ball and delivering it to the forwards who added four goals in the third and four in the final term.
Up the other end the Bulldogs kicked seven last quarter goals to win 19.17.131 to 11.8.74.
Rodney Jetta was the best scorer for Bridgetown with five goals while goal-kicking machine Matt McLeod continues to be a shining light for Boyup Brook with seven majors.
To finish the round, Deanmill took a narrow win over Tigers. The Hawks trailed the visitors by three points at the first break and by four points at half time.
The third quarter saw the home side wrestle their way to a five point lead which they extended to 11 by the end of the game. The final scoreboard showed a Deanmill victory 9.12.66 to 8.7.55.
Brynn Francis impressed again for the Hawks with four goals while Tim Ioannou kicked two.
Paul Starkie was the best scorer for Tigers with two majors.
Round 10 on Saturday will see Bridgetown host Deanmill, Southerners host Kojonup and Tigers host Imperials.
