THE FIRST National Serviceman from W.A. to be killed in the Vietnam War was remembered 50 years after his death at a re-dedication of his memorial statue in Nannup W.A.
Marinko “Tich” Tomas, born in Nannup on January 6, 1945, was a sheep and dairy farmer on the family property in Cundinup prior to being conscripted for National Service on June 30, 1965.
Lance Corporal Tomas was posted to 9 Platoon, Charlie Company, 5th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR), dying after less than one month in Vietnam on July 8, 1966.
Representatives from the Tomas family, the Vietnam Veterans WA branch, and members of the 5RAR Association who served with Tomas gathered with Nannup locals as dignitaries from all over the country commemorated him.

Col (ret) Roger Wainwright, president of 5RAR Association Australia said that after 50 years the shock had gone but theloss remains and the pain and mourning linger.
“Marinko ‘Tich’ Tomas, after 50 years and beyond, we will never forget you.”
John Nguyen, vice president of the Republic of Vietnam Veterans Association, was grateful to Australia for protecting their freedom.
“On behalf of the Republic of Vietnam Veteran Association in WA, I would like to thank Marinko and his fallen mates for their sacrifice,” Mr Nguyen said.
“We also extend our thanks to Marinko’s family for their irreparable loss and the Australian government for sending their best soldiers to our country."
