TWELVE-year-old Corley McLernon from Bridgetown has experienced his first ever professional junior golf tournament, participating in the Drummond Golf 45 Hole Classic.
The weather-shortened tournament, which was held last week at Margaret River, Dunsborough Lakes and Busselton Golf Clubs, was enjoyed by 43 junior golfers from all over the state, with Corley coming 17th nett.
Kathryn Norris of Mandurah Country Club and Jose De Sousa of Gosnells Golf Club were the overall winners of the event.
Corley has been passionate about playing golf since he was a baby, when he learnt to walk by using a golf club.
Proud mother Alison McLernon said her son’s passion for golf was infectious.
“Corley is just a natural and has had a club in his hand since he was a baby.
“He is so passionate and his dream is to become a professional golfer,” Mrs McLernon said.
Corley is a member of the Greenbushes Golf Club and takes professional lessons at the Albany Golf Club.
“Corley’s coach from Albany suggested he nominate for this tournament to see if this really is the path he wants to go down.
“It was a real eye opener to be playing at different clubs and he is now more passionate and determined than ever,” she said.
“It is great to see that golf is not just a game for adults.”
