The first of this year’s South West Netball Region junior carnivals were held in Donnybrook and Bridgetown on August 7.
The 15's competition was hosted in Donnybrook on outdoor netball courts in wet and blustery conditions.
There were seven teams competing from Donnybrook, Manjimup, Leschenault, Bunbury, Busselton, and Pinjarra.
The category was closely fought up until the last round, where there were four teams in contention to win it.
Manjimup eventually prevailed on top, on equal points to Leschenault, but won on the head-to-head outcome.
Suzi Giblett, Manjimup Netball Association junior development coach, said her players persevered through “horrendous” weather conditions.
“The actual level of competition was outstanding. All of the teams had beaten each other, it was a very even competition. One of the best I’ve seen in the region for a while,” Giblett said.
Bridgetown hosted the 14's carnival where they had 10 teams compete in two divisions. Team were entered from Busselton, Leschenault, Bridgetown, Manjimup, Eaton, and Bunbury.
Busselton won Division 1 with ease while Eaton secured top place in Division 2.
Busselton 14’s development team coach Mary Everuss was confident heading into the competition.
“We started strong and finished strong. It was probably the best they played all year,” Everuss said.
“They brought it home so I’m very proud of them.”
The 11’s competition will be held in Busselton this Sunday, followed by the 12’s in Bunbury on August 21, finishing with the 13’s in Leschenault on August 28.
