Thousands are expected to head to Balingup this weekend to take a step back in time and celebrate the 20th annual medieval carnivale.
Kings, queens, warriors, wizards are just some of the characters that will gather together for the annual event that originally started out as a tulip festival.
Carnivale chairperson Diana Brett said the event had evolved from humble beginnings into the international event that it is today, attracting more than 10,000 people.
“The Balingup Medieval Carnivale provides joy to those of us who need a bit of fantasy, because fantasy is really what it is all about,” Diana said.
“We get people coming from all over the state to do the reenactments of battles which is just one of the many highlights of the carnival.”
Diana became involved with the carnivale when she met Rosalind Benson 15 years ago.
“Rosalind came up with the idea for this festival all those years ago with the aim of providing education and economic growth for the area,” she said.
“Since then so many people in our community volunteer to put this together each year with all funds generated from the carnivale going back into the community.”
The fun begins this Friday night with a gluttonous evening feast, followed by plenty of market stalls and awesome entertainment all weekend. For more information and to purchase tickets, go to: balingupmedievalcarnivale.com.au
