Brian Vanallen did not know it at the time, but his winning photograph managed to capture a special day for two of his guests.
In celebration of last Friday’s World Photo Day, the South West Development Commission announced the winners of its annual photography competition.
The rustic country charm of the Vanallens’ 46-acre Balingup Heights Hilltop Forest Cottages is the perfect spot to showcase a magical morning mist over the Blackwood River Valley.
Cottage owner Brian snapped a photograph of a couple in silhouette; who he later discovered got engaged to each other that day,
The picture was one of 26 photos that won a spot in the 2017 This South West Life calendar, which will be made available for free later this year to promote the region.
Entrants were, this year, asked to capture on camera what it is about the South West corner of the state that makes them smile.
Brian’s photo was selected by SWDC chairman Stuart Hicks as this year’s recipient of the Chairman’s Choice award.
“This is a very fine photograph, episodically composed,” Stuart said.
“In the foreground, a couple enjoy the majestic mist. In the middle-ground … a rolling paddock, in the distance … forest. You wouldn’t mistake it for being anywhere but our South West.
“I smile as I join them on their hillside seat.”
Brian said he had been a keen amateur photographer since his childhood.
His dad had a dark room, which influenced him from a young age.
A couple of guests got engaged that day, so we sent the photo on to them as a piece of memorabilia.

“I think it depicts the winter we get every year in this magical little town,” Brian said.
“The mists blanket the valley.”
He said it was a fortuitous moment.
“It was one of those snaps where it just happens.”
Other winners include Jodi Nield of Boyup Brook and Karen Garratt of Manjimup.
Runners-up include Paul West of Bridgetown, Roslyn Ladyman of Donnybrook, and Katherine Waddington of Nannup.
