A group of fundraisers dressed up as superhero characters will ride on motorised scooters from Bridgetown to Perth in aid of Childhood Cancer Awareness month.
Superdad Simon Kane from Bridgetown is the mastermind behind the 10-day 600km trip, aimed at raising awareness to honour children who are fighting cancer and to raise funds for further research to help cure the illness.
Simon and his wife Kim have been dealing with childhood cancer since their son Declan was diagnosed in 2013 with high risk stage five neuroblastoma, when he was just 3 years old.
Declan has endured intense treatment with repeated rounds of chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy in Perth and Sydney to help battle the cancer.
Now 7 years old, Declan continues to fight the aggressive illness.
Childhood cancer is not the same as adult cancer.
Researchers and doctors are yet to discover what causes childhood cancer and currently there is no prevention.
Lifestyle choices and genetics are rarely attributed to the disease developing.
Children develop different types of cancer to adults yet often receive the same treatments. These, however, do not always help children with cancer.
“We believe that research is vital to finding new and specific child-friendly treatments,” Simon said.
“Our goal is to raise as much awareness about childhood cancer as we possibly can because we know that awareness brings money and this will help pay for research.”
During the past four years, the family have been in the midst of some incredible stories of children fighting the disease, with the superhero scooter trip aimed at raising thousands of dollars to go towards research to help find cures.
“The ‘Superkids-Superheroes’ theme is because we have seen first-hand just how harsh cancer can be on kids.
“We know that the real heroes live in the hearts of these small children fighting big battles, so we decided to raise awareness and funds to help them.”
Commencing this Thursday outside St Brigid’s Primary School; Simon and his gang will be riding motorised scooters from Bridgetown to Perth, via Manjimup, Margaret River, Busselton, Bunbury, Waroona and Mandurah – and welcome anyone to come and join them along the way.
“Anyone is welcome to join us on the journey for a small cost each day. It is going to be a fantastic fun event and we are really looking forward to getting as much attention as possible for this cause.
