Five out of nine National Landcare Award categories were won by Western Australian landcarers.
Among the winners was Blackwood Basin Community Group, who took home the Fairfax Media Landcare Community Group Award.
The group was praised for its dedication to coordinating community-managed landcare projects across the Blackwood Catchment for over two decades.
“I think it will energise everybody in the group, not that they aren’t already,” chair Per Christensen said.
Another local winner of an award is Southampton Homestead of Balingup.
They won the Australian Government Innovation in Sustainable Farm Practices Award and People’s Choice Award.
Owner Jeff Pow said regenerative farming was the next level.
“It’s amazing way to restore the environment. I’m going to be handing this planet on, and I need to be able to say that I wasn’t happy with how things were being done and I drew a line in the sand I said that this is the way we should do it.”
The awards are a key part of the National Landcare Conference, which took place from September 21 to 23 in Melbourne.
