Twelve top photos were selected for the 2017 Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup calendar on November 28.
The Donnybrook-Balingup Shire was delighted with the response to this year’s photographic competition, announcing the winners at a presentation at Snack Shack in Donnybrook.
This year’s theme of “back in time” encouraged budding photographers to capture images which told a story about the shire’s heritage, cultural diversity, majestic landscapes, and life on our farms and in our historic towns.
The best 12 photos will feature in the 2017 Donnybrook-Balingup Shire calendar, which will be distributed to all residents and businesses in the Shire in the week prior to Christmas.
The overall winner of the competition was Joy Arnold with her photo titled “Brookhampton Hall and Memorial”.
Second place was Jan Kirkpatrick with her photo titled “Old Chevy”, and third place was taken out by Sherry Thomas with her photo titled “Ride Preston Valley”.
Joy, a resident of the Donnybrook area for the past 17 years, enjoys taking photos when she is out and about.
“The theme was ‘back in time’, so I was looking for an old premises. I thought the memorial and the hall have Donnybrook history in it,” she said.”
“It depicted the Donnybrook-Balingup area. I thought the older people would appreciate it.”
The three overall winners were selected from the 12 winning entries, and each received a Donnybrook Bendigo Bank account; first place - $500, second place and third place - $100.
This year’s judges included: Donnybrook Bendigo Bank branch customer relations manager Debbie Sharp, local artist Carolyn Austin, Donnybrook District High School photography and media teacher Len Strother, and councillor Anne Mitchell.
Shire president Angelo Logiudice said they received 84 entries.
“The judges were extremely impressed with the standard and diversity of entries, and deliberated long and hard to select the final winners,” he said.
“The Shire was very pleased to welcome the Bendigo Community Bank back as a sponsor for this year’s photographic competition. I have no doubt that the prize money was an added motivator for entrants.”
Next year’s competition details will be advertised in August 2017, keep an eye out on the website: donnybrook-balingup.wa.gov.au
