In what was an emotional moment, Manjimup football product Beau Chatley has walked from his hospital ward at to spend Christmas with his family.
The East Perth Royal sustained a “significant” spinal injury during a WAFL game in July after he came off awkwardly from a contest and lost the feeling in his arms and legs during a game against West Perth Falcons.
According to a release from East Perth Football Club on Thursday, intensive therapy from 8am-4pm every day had allowed the young footballer to regain enough strength and coordination to walk small distances.
“He has also regained limited mobility in his arms,” the release stated.
“Beau is hopeful that he will continue to improve his range of motion in his hands, as well as increasing his coordination to walk longer distances.”
In recent weeks Beau, has been leaving the hospital on weekends into a rented unit in Perth.
This unit will now become his permanent residency in between regular physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions.
“Beau’s recovery so far has been a triumph of perseverance and determination, however Beau and his family understand there is still a long road ahead,” the release stated.
“Beau, the Chatley family and the East Perth Football Club would like to thank everyone for their support since the incident occurred in July.
“The donations and kind words have been overwhelming and very much appreciated.”
