Regional Development Minister Terry Redman visited Boyup Brook on Wednesday to announce Royalties for Regions funding to help expand the local St John Ambulance facility.
St John Ambulance Boyup Brook chairperson Angela Hales welcomed the $22,550 grant from the Community Chest Fund, delivered by the South West Development Commission.
“It’s awesome – we’ve recently increased our fleet from two to three ambulances and this will allow a garage extension for them all to be parked undercover,” she said.
Mrs Hales said the expansion would allow for more storage space so equipment would not be exposed to the elements, plus it would also facilitate a change area for the officers.
“It is not unusual for our officers to get call-outs at 2am so as you can imagine they might arrive in their pyjamas and the like,” she said.
Mrs Hales said the region’s ageing population and extensive range of events meant there was always a demand for ambulance crews.
“The South West works together and by having three vans, we can make sure our town is not left without cover,” she said.
“And our teams benefit from going to other events and activities in other places, it’s great training.”
Work on the expansion is set to get underway later this year.
