Hundreds of motorcycles are expected to pass through Nannup for morning tea on their way from Busselton to Collie as part of a Black Dog Ride (BDR) planned for next month.
The BDR SW 1Dayer on Sunday, March 19 aims to raise awareness of depression and suicide prevention in the community, promoting the message ‘we need to talk’.
Black Dog Ride was established in Busselton in 2009 by local Steve Andrews, who rode his motorcycle solo around Australia in 26 days to raise awareness of depression and suicide prevention.
The South West BDR 1 Dayer supports Lamp Inc South West, a community-based non-government organisation that works with consumers, carers and families who are affected by a mental illness. BDR also encourages local community organisations including the PCYC, Lions clubs and Country Women’s Association to partner with them to provide food and refreshments for riders, providing useful fundraising opportunities for the local community.
The Nannup Community Resource Centre (CRC) has worked with the BDR for the past six years to coordinate the Nannup stop and involve the community.
Nannup CRC Special Projects Officer Cate Stevenson said the atmosphere created by the event was amazing.
“I encourage locals to come and see the bikes and the spectacle from 10.30-11.45am on Sunday, March 19 as riders pass through Nannup for an hour to have a morning tea stop,” she said.
“They can also pop into the Town Hall to see artwork by Nannup District High School students about the Black Dog Ride message.”
