A man accused of breaking into a stranger's apartment and stabbing one of the occupants to death and seriously injuring another has pleaded not guilty to murder. 

Damian Eric Maxfield appeared in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to the murder of Scott Martin, 40, and the attempted murder of Mr Martin's partner, Erelle Mason, 32. 

The 38-year-old is accused of breaking into the couple's Halls Head apartment on January 14, 2017 in the early hours of the morning as they slept. 

The alleged incident occurred at the beachside Blue Bay Apartments on Valley Road. 

Mr Maxfield's lawyer indicated on Wednesday he may apply for a trial by judge alone.
