The delivery of more affordable housing options for seniors living in Manjimup is expected to create and support employment and economic activity over the next four years, according to the WA Government.
The Department of Communities has begun operations to transform the former Manjimup Primary School site into 55 new homes tailored for people over the age of 55 as part of the Manjimup Seniors Living Project.
Redevelopment of the 2.5 hectare site on Moore Street – within walking distance of medical, retail and entertainment amenities in the town’s centre – is planned for delivery in five stages.
Subject to demand, 10 to 15 homes will be built annually in the next four years.
The initial site works are due for completion in May 2018 with construction of the first homes expected to begin in June 2018.
Housing Minister Peter Tinley said the project will generate and support employment and business activity for local economy.
“The Department of Communities has consulted extensively with the Shire of Manjimup since the former primary school site was acquired in 2010 to ensure the delivery of the right housing options for seniors,” Mr Tinley said.
“The Manjimup Seniors Living Project will deliver appropriate and affordable downsizer housing opportunities for Manjimup seniors.
“It will provide more than four walls and a roof - it will be a place that people over the age of 55 can call home, in a community they already feel at home in.
“The Department of Communities works to advance opportunities, community participation and quality of life of the people it supports, with a clear focus on inclusion and meeting individual needs. The Manjimup Seniors Living Project is a great example of this.”
