Donnybrook Shire residents are being encouraged by local police to report hoon drivers to help stamp out reckless and dangerous driving in the region.
Sergeant Ryan van der Heide said he was concerned about the level of hoon-related activity occurring on the roads and was looking for community members to support the notion that dangerous and antisocial driving behaviour would not be tolerated.
“We have growing concerns that hoon activities such as burnouts are increasing in Donnybrook, Kirup, Balingup and along the surrounding highways, and there is plenty of visual evidence to support this,” Sergeant van der Heide said.
“This is not acceptable behaviour, is extremely dangerous and it does not reflect a welcoming, friendly and socially responsible community.”
Tough anti-hoon laws give WA police the power to impound vehicles being driven irresponsibly, which includes doing burnouts, driving that causes damage to the road or property, or driving likely to cause harassment, fear or distress.
Sergeant van der Heide said hoon driving involved risk-taking behaviour, often by young and inexperienced drivers, which put the community at risk and hoped community members would advise police if they saw or heard such behaviour.
“Police encourage anyone who witnesses hoon driving to obtain the vehicle registration, if it is safe to do so, and report the incident as quickly as possible,” he said.
“This can be done anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or completing a traffic complaint form at www.police.wa.gov.au.
“Antisocial driving behaviour is happening in our town and it really is our responsibility to look after each other.
“If we all work together we can help address this issue so as to make our community a safer place for everyone.”
With the celebratory and holiday periods fast approaching, Sergeant van der Heide wished to share a festive message to all residents and visitors.
“On behalf of the staff at Donnybrook Police Station, I would like to thank you all for the support you provide to us and wish you and your families an enjoyable Christmas and a safe and happy new year,” he said.
“To all our road users over this festive season, we encourage you to plan your trip, take regular stops and above all, please be a patient and courteous driver.”
