The Southern Forests Food Council in Manjimup has received $1.5 million in funding to unlock new economic opportunities for the region and to support their journey to become self-sufficient.
The state government funding will help the council find alternative ways to make revenue, connect members to new market opportunities and identify agricultural development opportunities over the next three years.
The council has been operating for five years and has made a significant contribution to the local economy through promoting local produce and establishing efficient pathways in the supply chain for producers to access new markets.
Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the funding would enable the council to move forward with more economic opportunities for the region.
“This funding will progress the work of the project to the next level, building on the momentum established over the past five years,” she said.
“The McGowan Government wants to assist the council to further trumpet the agricultural food delights of the region - including truffles - as well as build on the fantastic success of the Genuinely Southern Forests brand.
“I look forward to seeing more success stories for local businesses through the council’s work.”
The announcement was made ahead of the Truffle Kerfuffle festival that happened over the weekend, which highlighted the region as a significant food bowl and culinary tourism destination.
