The state government has committed $2 million in funding to help support the needs of ageing residents in Donnybrook.
The state government committed the funds to the Bridge Street Affordable Housing Project, to help with the construction of 11 new units at the housing facility.
The project is a partnership between the Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup and community housing provider Alliance Housing and aims to provide independent living units for people over 55 years of age or with special needs.
The $2 million in funding had previously been committed to the project by the previous state government in January 2017, and was reaffirmed earlier this month by the Labor Government.
Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray said it was important to make sure elderly residents and their families were able to remain in regional communities.
“The older population is such an important part of our community and the McGowan Government is committed to supporting projects that support them,” he said.
“This funding will allow more families in our community stay together and close by, which is something I support wholeheartedly.”
Regional development minister Alannah MacTiernan said the funding was necessary to support the growing demand for aged care accommodation in regional communities.
“Projected growth rates for people aged over 65 in regional areas is greater, often significantly greater, than those in metropolitan areas,” she said.
“Quality aged accommodation will enable West Australians to continue living in their regional community, while also supporting local jobs and local businesses, and improving the lives of families across the state.”
