You probably could have guessed, but now research has shown, that our style preferences become more traditional as we age.

According to recent insights from Beaumont Tiles’ What’s my style quiz, Scandinavian – defined by pale colours, natural materials and minimalism at its finest - was the number one style choice for renovators aged 16 to 25. 

However the style declined in popularity as the demographic aged, ending up least favourite for those aged 56 and above.

Beaumont Tiles’ Strategic Designer, Vanessa Thompson, said the location and lifestyle choices of young Australians is one reason why Scandi is more popular among this age group.

“Younger generations living in cities are most likely living in apartments where space is restricted. Scandi styling is functional, organic, and yet radiates a playful persona that lends itself really well to small space living,” she said.

“It is also available at all sorts of price points and is centred off one vibrant hero colour and can be easily accentuated with décor of mixed textures – so it’s a really accessible style.”

Findings also showed that Generation Y has started morphing into their parents’ style early, with Classic Traditional being the first choice for all age demographics from 26 years and up.

“Categorised by elegant and timeless features, with neutral tones and added depth with complex colours and symmetrical shapes, Classic Traditional is all about being warm and welcoming,” said Ms Thompson.

“When you think about it, really suits the first home-buyer or the older demographic where the home is their main place for entertaining.”

For those aged 26-45, Scandinavian styling was their second choice, and Modern – defined as clutter-free and featuring largely neutral décor – was their third preference.

For those aged 46 and over, Coastal and Country Chic took up second and third place respectively, perhaps reflecting their desire to leave the city by creating a beach or rural feel.

“Country Chic is also touching back to a time of rustic furniture, teamed with a relaxed style with heavier furnishings and florals – it’s perfect for those making a tree change, or just wanting to replicate its vibe,” Ms Thompson said.
