The hunt was on for all creatures great and small at Schwenke’s Dam in Greenbushes recently as locals recorded a snapshot of the natural life around the wetland.
More than 30 people took binoculars, notebooks and cameras in hand as they scoured the forest and the water’s edge recording as many invertebrates, birds and plants as possible within eight hours.
The citizen science project was organised by Margaret Jakobson on behalf of the Blackwood Basin Group with funding from the Natural Resource Management Programme, Talison Lithium and Global Advanced Metals.
The day long blitz brought together local experts Felicity Littleton of Greenbushes, Dr Per Christensen, forest entomologist Dr Janet Farr and Wendy Eiby.
Ms Jakobson said the data collected at the Bioblitz would be collated in a report which would provide a snapshot of the area.
“It is hoped this can be a yearly event, bringing together the whole community to help create an invaluable resource to show the diversity of life in Greenbushes,” she said.
