An inspirational open day was held at Bridgetown Pottery on Wednesday, October 10 as part of the celebrations of WA Mental Health Week, which this year focused on community and the various settings people go to every day to help support the wellbeing of others.
Sponsored and hosted by Tender Care Mental Health and Recovery, several workshops were held to help people discover the power of self-care practices and supports within the community.
The day commenced with a revitalising yoga session led by Christine Ashbil and a sound meditation session with Jen Nelson-Goerling. Other sessions throughout the day included guest speaker’s Dr Sarah Youngson, Tanya Beechey and Tamara York, followed by an art workshop with Su Burghis-Garde and an African drumming and dance session with Daun Crozier.
Tender Care Bridgetown coordinator, Julie Brown, said it was an opportunity for people to see some of the services and programs available within the community for themselves or for someone they may care for.
“Many people in our community may not be aware of what is available within our community for them or for someone they may care for,” Ms Brown said. “Today is all about looking at some of the many programs that have been developed in the community for youth and adults, as well as an opportunity for some self-care.”
Tender Care Recovery Worker, Christine Ashbil, said the day was a great success, which she hoped would show people what was available when they need some extra support.
“The focus of all of the activities were on supporting the individual towards healing on their unique journey of recovery of mental health and wellbeing by exploring a variety of rewarding social, recreational and vocational experiences,” Ms Ashbil said.
It’s normal to have ups and downs in life, it happens to all of us. If you or someone you know isn’t going so well, there are things you can do to support yourself or them.
Today was just a sample of some of the many great opportunities available in our community and we look forward to doing it all again next year.”
