A slow start in the first quarter did not help the Busselton Magpies league side in their second loss for the South West Football League season.
Travelling to VC Mitchell Park in Donnybrook, the Magpies had a tough ask facing the 2018 Premiers in round two of the competition.
Busselton Magpies league coach Steve Lester said they went into the match hoping to back up effort from round one.
"By and large we did that but our ball use let us down," he said.
Donnybrook came out firing in the first quarter with four goals and two behinds.
However, the Magpies were limited to three behinds.
As the teams changed ends, the Magpies' fortune also improved in the second term.
Lester said after a slow start his team played some good footy in the second quarter.
Busselton narrowed the margin with three goals and two behinds and Donnybrook only kicked one major and one behind.
The half time score was 5.3(33) to 3.5(23).
Lester said the second half was pretty even for both teams but Busselton couldn't convert their opportunities and a few turnovers in the middle proved costly.
Donnybrook were dominant once again in the third quarter, kicking four goals and three behinds.
Busselton couldn't get closer to the lead with just two goals.
There was little scoring from both sides in the last quarter which did not work in the Magpies' favour.
Donnybrook were able to keep the lead with one goal and one behind while Busselton could only kick four behinds.
The final score was 10.7(67) to 5.9(39).
Lester said they had to make a few position changes to accommodate the loss of injured forward Jed Kemp.
As soon as they get their hands on the ball they can score heavily
- Busselton coach Steve Lester
As a result he was really impressed with Ben Avery's effort on the half back line and Cameron Embry in forward.
Busselton will go into the Easter break sitting ninth on the ladder after two losses for the season.
They will be back at home for round three but will have another challenge playing top spot Eaton Boomers.
Lester said it would be a big challenge for the Magpies as Eaton have proved themselves to be big scorers in the first two rounds.
Eaton were victorious over Collie in round one with an 87 point margin and in round two saw the Boomers kick 21 goals to win by more than 100 points over Carey Park.
Lester said limiting the Boomers' ball supply would be critical to winning the game.
"As soon as they get their hands on the ball they can score heavily," he said.
He said Busselton's midfield would have a big a task on their hands as they would need to get their hands on the ball first.
In other results, South Bunbury picked up its first win when they played Collie Eagles.
The Busselton women's side will be looking to pick up where they left off in round one when they play Eaton.
The women's team will enjoy two weeks off after a round two bye and then the Easter break.
HBL were victorious over Bunbury and Augusta Margaret River Hawks had a big win over Harvey.
Eaton lost their first match to Collie by 23 points whereas the Magpies kicked six straight goals to win against Harvey Brunswick Leschenault.
