Liverpool smashed derby rivals Everton at Anfield on Wednesday as Manchester United handed former manager Jose Mourinho his first loss as Tottenham boss in Premier League action on Wednesday.
The Reds thrashed Everton 5-2 to send the Toffees into the relegation zone, while a Marcus Rashford brace ensured an unhappy return to Old Trafford for Mourinho with a 2-1 win.
The Reds consolidated their position at the top of the table with a classy attacking display to mark manager Juergen Klopp's 100th EPL win.
They also established a new club record of 32 top-flight games unbeaten and extended their league unbeaten run in the Merseyside derby to 18 games.
Sadio Mane provided two assists and scored himself in the 45th minute as Klopp made five changes to his team.
Divock Origi (6th, 31st) and Xerdan Shaqiri (17th) rewarded Klopp for being included in the starting line-up with outstanding displays and goals, while Georginio Wijnaldum (90th) also got on the scoresheet.
"I had to show respect to the boys for what they do in training. I speak about the quality of the squad so I have to show it in my selection," Klopp said.
"We gave the responsibility to the boys to perform and they showed what they're made of."
Belgian striker Origi was thrilled to play a major role in the derby victory.
"The manager showed us trust and we just had to repay it as much as possible, it's an important game," he told Amazon Prime.
"I think the first goal just broke the game open, but the second one, I enjoyed that one."
Everton's loss dropped them to 18th, but coach Marco Silva would not be drawn into discussing the possibility of his Goodison Park tenure ending as a result of the defeat.
"I am not the right person to speak about that or to answer that. You'll have to ask a different person than myself," he said.
"Every game I play you come out with the same question, you will have to ask someone other than me."
In Manchester, Mourinho - fired by United 12 months ago - was given a generous reception by the club's fans as he walked along the touchline to the dugout before kickoff.
Rashford opened the scoring in the sixth minute when he picked up a loose ball on the left, cut inside, and drilled a low shot inside the near post to beat goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.
Dele Alli maintained his strong scoring form since Mourinho's arrival by equalising with a superb individual goal in the 39th, bringing down a dropping ball with a deft touch and poking a finish into the corner.
Rashford was the standout player all match and he grabbed the winner from the penalty spot after being fouled by Moussa Sissoko following a foraging run down the left into the box.
The win lifted United above Tottenham into sixth place in the standings and should ease some of the pressure on Mourinho's replacement, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after disappointing recent draws against Sheffield United and Aston Villa.
United manager Solskjaer felt the result was deserved, telling Amazon Prime: "We played well, especially in the first half, that was probably the best we've played.
"The boys followed the plan, they executed all night."
In other matches, Southampton beat Norwich 2-1, Chelsea defeated Aston Villa 2-1, Leicester went second with a 2-0 win over Watford while Wolves were 2-0 winners over West Ham.
Jamie Vardy opened the scoring for Leicester from the spot in the 55th minute while James Maddison netted in the 90th minute to seal the win.
Southampton jumped out of the relegation zone with their win over fellow battlers Norwich.
Danny Ings (22nd) and Ryan Bertrand (43rd) scored for Southampton while Temmu Pukki got one back for the Canaries.
