Bookaar shooter Penny Smith has made an impressive start to the clay target Olympic trials but is not getting ahead of herself.
Smith leads the women's trap trials after the first two Australian team selection events.
They were held at Newcastle Lake Macquarie Clay Target Club last week.
She leads the race for Tokyo Olympic Games selection with 239 points, ahead of Laetisha Scanlan (231) and Catherine Skinner (223).
A panel will determine who receives Australia's second spot in the women's trap.
Smith is focusing on the present.
"I don't like to focus on the Olympics at the moment, they're still a long way away," she said.
The 24-year-old claimed a silver medal in the Commonwealth title on Wednesday after shooting 40/50 in the final.
"It was a good way to start the season," she said.
Smith then competed in the national trap finals on Friday and Saturday.
She shot a stunning qualifying score of 115/125 but finished fourth in the final.
"It was a tough week all round. There were trying hot conditions at the beginning of the week, torrential rain and also misty rain. But you've got to do the best you can," she said.
"But it was a good week for me. I definitely shot better in qualifying events than in the finals.
"I didn't finish the week with any blue sashes or gold medals, but I was really happy to have qualifying scores of 116 and 115."
The next Olympic trap selection event starts on February 27 at Melbourne Gun Club.
"It's another big match, I'll have some time off this week," she said.
"Then I'll knuckle down and get back into training next week and beyond."
The fourth and final Olympic selection event will be held in Sydney in March.
Smith trains at Bookaar and travels to Werribee Victorian Clay Target Club once or twice a week.
She's grateful to her mum Kim, dad Michael and brother Andrew for their support.
