South West junior driver prepares for state title in Karratha

He got into a car as soon as it was legally possible for him at the ripe age of 10.

"Pop would always talk about racing to him and then asked if he was interested in driving and it just snowballed from there," Deagan's mum Sam Carman said.

Deagan is currently racing in a Hyundai XL in the top start junior division.

One of his favourite moments was winning the Bunbury gold cup as in the new start division.

The boy from Donnybrook lives and breaths racing as he aims to win the state title in Karratha over Easter.

Last year, Deagan finished 13^th which only gave him a push to do even better in 2021.

However he did have one setback when he broke his leg last October.

"It was really frustrating because I was watching the live races from my couch and I wanted to be out there," he said.

So when he was able to start training again in February he hasn't wasted a moment.

Carman said one of his first drives back on the track he smashed into the wall.

"It's nerve wracking for a mum but I am also proud of him," she said.

Deagan wasn't injured from the crash but he said it was still scary.

"It's scary because I knew it was coming and I thought 'this is going to hurt'," he said.

"But I also learn how to save myself from those things."

The family call him 'Ducking Deagan' because of his overtaking style on the track.

"I like to sit high on the straight and then duck under them to overtake - it's really fun to do," he said.

At the state titles, Deagan has his eye on Seth Hinsey, who he looks up to as a driver but also competes against him too.

"I have only beaten him once," he said.

The competition won't be easy as there will be a practice on the Friday, three heats on Saturday and then the feature race on Sunday.

Deagan will have to do well in each of the lead up races to be placed well for the state title.
