GRAI (GLBTI Rights in Aging Inc) is launching the Queer BookClub in Busselton as a result of community feedback at the Busselton Pride Festival, and thanks to the generous support from the Department of Communities.
The Queer BookClub invites readers to explore 'queer books' - broadly defined as those which relate to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual or queer lives, characters or authors.
Importantly, the Queer BookClub is an intergenerational venture, that aims to bring all members of Busselton's LGBTIQA+ community together in a safe, supportive and inclusive space to enjoy literature, conversation and most of all engage with each other.
GRAI secretary and Queer BookClub organiser David Gibson, said in our lifetime, there had been enormous social changes in attitudes towards the LGBTIQ+ community, and it was fascinating to explore this through our responses to queer storie.
"The intergenerational perspectives can be invaluable to enrich our understandings", he said.
"Queer stories are definitely becoming more apparent in mainstream literature, and our June book 'Invisible Boys' by Perth author Holden Sheppard is a great example of this."
To help as many people as possible be involved the Queer BookClub is thrilled to be working with local bookshop Barefoot Books to offer free copies of the book Invisible Boys.
Just mention you are interested in joining the Queer BookClub and it's free for those on fixed incomes (limited stock) or a discount is available for those in full time employment.
The Queer BookClub will be launched on Saturday July 3, from 4 - 5:30pm at Barefoot Books, Shop 13 Figtree Lane, Busselton. This is a free event, and refreshments will be provided.
