The Mail is counting down the top 10 most read stories of 2016. Here’s what came in at number 10:
August 6, 2016: The Manjimup community banded together to help raise money for critically injured footballer Beau Chatley.
More than 280 people attended the sold-out quiz night fundraiser, which was held at Tigers Football Club where Beau used to play.
The 21 year old has started rehabilitation on his arms following surgery on a serious neck and spinal injury received after he was slung to the ground by West Perth player Mitchell Antonio in a reserves game last month.
One of the organisers, Nathan Selkirk, said it was an opportunity for Manjimup locals to unite and show their support for Beau and his family.
“I reckon if it happened to anyone else, [the Chatleys] would do the same for us,” Nathan said.
He estimated about $30,000 was raised from the raffle, silent auction, normal auction, and quiz event.
Beau’s brothers Leighton and Reid were present last Friday, their parents and Beau’s girlfriend were in Perth at Beau’s side.
Nathan was pleased with the turnout.
“It was awesome for [the locals] to do that. What they have done is unreal for a community like this.”
A doorknock appeal was also held and another auction and raffle – featuring the inside story of Fletcher/McVeigh – was held on August 9 at Tigers Football Club, with all proceeds to the Beau Chatley recovery fund.
The OzCrowd campaign has garnered more than $35,000 – the target is $100,000.
