Registrations are open for 2018’s Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities awards.
Launching this year’s awards at the Wongan Hills Markets, Keep Australia Beautiful WA Chairman Michael Aspinall urged regional Western Australian towns and communities to get involved with the Tidy Towns initiative and register for this year’s awards.
“Tidy Towns is a concept that brings communities together and contributes to the sustainability of the town,” he said.
“The awards program promotes sustainable ways of living and a litter-free environment.
“As well as helping to motivate and initiate local action, the program recognises community efforts and allows participants to engage with and learn from others.”
Mr Aspinall said other benefits included an increased awareness of issues such as managing litter and waste and recycling, conserving water and energy and protecting natural habitats.
“The great initiatives that are part of Tidy Towns benefit communities in a range of ways,” he said.
There are seven categories in this year’s Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities awards:
- General Appearance
- Community Action and Wellbeing
- Environmental Sustainability
- Environmental Education
- Heritage and Culture
- Young Legends
- Litter Prevention and Waste Management
Communities can enter one or all of the categories. Registrations close on April 16 and project submissions are due by June 1.
Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities is funded by the Waste Authority through the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Account.
It is sponsored by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, the Waste Authority, and Main Roads WA.
