The free diabetes screening held last month by Amcal Pharmacy was a success with over 20 people attending the pop-up clinic.
The clinic held at the Donnybrook Football Club on April 21 was open to all members of the public and helped to identify those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, informing people about the condition, possible complications and ways to lower risk.
Donnybrook Amcal pharmacist Rowan Lowe said the team were thrilled to offer the free pop-up clinic to members of the community.
“We were thrilled to offer our Donnybrook locals a complimentary type 2 diabetes risk assessment, which could make a big difference in helping people reduce their risk.
Equally, we’re always available to help members of the community who currently live with diabetes, to remain on track with their management,” he said.
Local John Cross went along to the free screening because he said he didn’t have much knowledge prior.
“I hadn’t had much knowledge of diabetes before the screening, so it was good to go along and get a check-up,” he said.
Mr Cross encourages local residents to remember the importance of exercise and said to have regular check ups by their doctor to help minimise their risks of the condition.
“I try to do a lot of exercise because of my age, as well as getting blood tests to keep on top of blood sugar levels,” he said.
There are an estimated 1.2 million people aged two years and over as having diabetes and up to 500,000 undiagnosed cases, according to the Department of Health.
Mr Lowe said that the figures were ‘concerning’ given that diabetes is a ‘progressive condition.’
Serious complications can include kidney damage, heart attacks and vision loss.
