Sometimes it's the weirdest things that spark your memory into action involuntarily - smells, fleeting glances, food ...
Then there's Facebook. As a friend pointed out only this week, you get swamped with memories, like it or not. Some of them you actually might prefer to forget.
Either way, of the memories to remember it's the shared ones that are best - and readers across this wide, brown land tell us as much every week.
This phenomenal image from Mount Isa's rodeo in 1973 kicked off a cavalcade off reminisces earlier this week. Photographer Richard Mansell snapped the 1973 image in what was Mount Isa's golden jubilee year.
Then then a little further south in the Redlands, they remembered the Cloudland Ballroom in Brisbane. Imagine such a place today?
Apparently it was part of the social landscape of south-east Queensland for decades. So much so that a documentary is being made. If you're interested, and can safely cross the border, you can learn more here.
It's not all sweeping ballgowns and filtered light though.
In Victoria it's been the 10-year anniversary of record-breaking floods that have been on minds this week.
The floods ended what became known as the Millennium drought, with heavy rain recorded from September 2010 through until January 2011 thanks to a La Nina weather pattern. Rainfall totals of 100-300 millimetres were recorded.
There was flash flooding across central Victoria, mostly along the Avoca, Loddon and Campaspe rivers. Carisbrook, Rochester and Charlton were among the towns hardest-hit.
The water eventually flowed north, caused lasting problems for the Kerang district and left a damage bill estimated at $1.3 billion.
So that one quite possibly falls into the "prefer not to remember" category of memories. But no doubt there were good memories made, too. And they're the ones we need to concentrate on when we can't necessarily be making news ones right now.
